The Two-Horse Race
Almost every Australian points decision reduces to this choice. Your everyday card spend can only feed one ecosystem efficiently, so the question matters: over a year of $60,000 household spend, picking the program that matches your travel patterns is worth hundreds of dollars.
Point Values Head to Head
Our valuation model puts Qantas Points at 1.0–1.8 cents and Velocity Points at 0.9–1.7 cents. The floor is nearly identical; Qantas edges the ceiling because its international premium award availability, while still scarce, is broader thanks to the oneworld alliance. Full methodology: points valuation guide.
Where Each Program Wins
Qantas wins on:
- Network breadth. oneworld opens Qantas, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Qatar Airways and more — the deepest bench for round-the-world and multi-stop redemptions.
- Earning ubiquity. Qantas Points rain from retail partners, fuel, insurance and utilities; passive earning is simply easier.
- Card choice. From the 100,000-point bonus on the Qantas Premier Platinum down to the entry-level Qantas Premier Everyday, there's a card for every spend level.
Velocity wins on:
- Singapore Airlines. The partnership makes Velocity the better currency for much of Asia — KrisFlyer-served routes with genuinely good award availability.
- Family pooling. Households can combine points and status credits — unique in Australia and transformative for families chasing status.
- Domestic availability. Virgin Australia's smaller premium cabins aside, domestic reward seats are often easier to find at short notice.
The Cards
The flagships are closely matched: the Qantas Premier Platinum (100,000 bonus points, 1.25 pts/$, $149 first year) versus the Velocity Platinum (90,000 bonus points, 1.25 pts/$, $0 first year, no foreign transaction fees), both as at October 2026. The Velocity card's zero foreign fees make it the better traveller; the Qantas card's lounge access makes it the better flyer.
The Hedged Position
Can't decide? Don't. A flexible-currency card like the ANZ Explorer earns points transferable to both programs (plus KrisFlyer and others), at the cost of a step between earning and using. Our Membership Rewards guide explains the trade-off, and the comparison calculator prices all three paths against your actual spend.
The Verdict
Fly mostly domestic and to Europe or the US → Qantas. Fly to Asia, travel as a family, or want family status → Velocity. Genuinely split → flexible points. Then put the decision away and let the card do the work.
